Itinerary

Here is a quick run down of where we will be going

Tuesday, September 7    We fly to Denver and then fly from there to Jackson Hole Airport which is in Grand Teton National Park.  From there we will drive into Jackson and tour this quaint, tourist ski resort town.  We are staying at the base of a ski hill there (in a hotel of course).  This picture is of an arch in the town square made of elk antlers.  Jackson is the home of the national elk refuge.

Wednesday, September 8   This is a busy day traveling through Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone National Park.  We will see Old Faithful and many of the geysers this day.  We will be staying in West Yellowstone just outside the West Entrance of the park (which is actually in Montana.  This will be our base for 2 nights.

Thursday, September 9   We will spend the day in Yellowstone doing the Upper Loop Road.  Yellowstone was the first national park and has spectacular features.  There are lots of wildlife in the park, but Ida will have her eyes closed for that part.

Friday, September 10  We will finish our tour of Yellowstone and drive through the Shoshone National Forest to Cody, Wyoming, named for Buffalo Bill Cody.  There are a few museums here and we'll be taking in a western show.  In the summer they have rodeo every night.

Saturday, September 11.  We head North to Montana today to visit Little Bighorn National Monument where Custer's Last Stand was in 1876.  We then travel through a couple of small towns in Wyoming and will be staying overnight in Buffalo, Wyoming, Population 3,900..  We will officially be in the middle of nowhere then.

Sunday, September 12  We travel to the other end of Wyoming to visit Devils Tower National Monument (remember Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and then we will head into the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Our first stop in the town of Deadwood, SD.  Its an old western town that is now home to a bunch of casinos.  Sounds like a fun place.


Custer State Park
Monday, September 13.  We will finish our tour of Deadwood and take a short drive to Keystone SD where we will actually stay three nights in the same place!  This will be our base for sightseeing in this area over the next couple of days.  Our first stop is Mount Rushmore, otherwise known as, the Heads, for the night lighting ceremony..


Tuesday, September 14  We will take in Mt. Rushmore during the day and visit a nearby state park noted for scenery.

Wednesday, September 15.   We visit Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest sculpture still in process and take in some of the other local sites.  This is our last evening before returning home.

Thursday, September 16.  We sleep in and drive to Rapid City for a flight to Chicago and then Philadelphia arriving late in the evening.
